Objectives: To study the effectiveness of interstitial irradiation by 32P-chromic phosphate colloids on the occult metastasis during lung cancer resection.
Methods: 73 patients with lung cancer underwent resection of tumor and interstitial administration of 32P-colloid, with the same time span, 58 patients with same diagnosis underwent operation served as control group. Operative procedure: Lobectomy or peumonectomy was done depended upon the condition of tumor. The medicated 32P-CP activities 370MBq scattered infiltration into the fatty connective tissues of pulmonary hilum, carina of trachea, upper mediastinum and the pleura suspected with involvement of tumor. Comparison of the complication incidence, supra-clavicle lymph node (SCL) metastasis rates in different pathologic patterns, and survival rates at 1, 3, 5 years were studied.
Results: No operative death occurred in these two groups. The pathologic patterns, incidences of lymph node metastasis and the incidences of major complication after operation were no prominent differences between the two groups (P>0.05). The incidence of post-operative SCL metastasis in surgery plus 32P-colloid group was prominently lower than that in surgery group (P<0.05). 5-year survival rates were 82.2% and 77.6% respectively. As different pathologic pattern groups, there is no prominent statistical difference between groups of the 1-year survival rates (P>0.05), but the diferences between the groups of 3-,5-year survial rates are prominent (P<0.05).
Conclusions: Stromal medication of 32P-colloid during resection of lung cancer is a safe and effective procedure in controlling the occult lymphatic metastatic lesions to diminish the focal relapse and distant metastasis, and is surely to prolong the surviving time of patients.
